Storing and Protecting Your Trading Card Collection

Condition is value. Learn the right sleeves, holders and storage habits to keep cards in the shape you bought them.

By FlipScout Team

A card's condition is one of the biggest drivers of its value. Good storage habits are cheap insurance.

The basic protection stack

  • Penny sleeves: soft plastic sleeves that protect the surface from scratches. Use them for any card you care about.
  • Top loaders: rigid plastic holders for valuable singles. Slide the sleeved card in carefully to avoid edge damage.
  • Semi-rigid holders: commonly requested by grading companies for submissions.
  • Team bags: resealable bags that keep top loaders clean and keep cards from sliding out.
  • Binders: use side-loading, acid-free, PVC-free pages. Avoid ring binders that press dents into cards.

Environment matters

  • Keep cards away from direct sunlight, which fades color.
  • Avoid humid basements and hot attics; moisture causes warping.
  • Store boxes upright and avoid stacking heavy items on them.

Keep records

Track what you own, what you paid and its condition. A personal inventory makes insurance, selling and planning much easier. A free FlipScout account includes a collection and inventory tracker where you can log purchase prices, your own estimated values and sales.

Shipping cards you sell

Use a sleeve plus top loader, seal it in a team bag, and sandwich it between cardboard inside a bubble mailer. For valuable cards, use tracked shipping and consider insurance.
