Spotting Fake Pokémon Cards: A Practical Checklist
Counterfeit Pokémon cards are common at flea markets and online. Use this checklist to protect your money before you buy singles or bulk lots.
By FlipScout Team
Counterfeit Pokémon cards range from obvious fakes to convincing reproductions. A few simple checks will catch most of them.
Visual checks
- Font and spelling. Fakes often use the wrong font, odd spacing or misspellings in attack names and descriptions.
- Energy symbols. Compare symbol size, color and placement to a known genuine card from the same set.
- Color and print quality. Genuine cards have crisp printing. Washed-out colors, blurry text or an overly glossy finish are red flags.
- The back of the card. The blue swirl pattern should be even, and the colors should match a genuine card. Many fakes have a purple tint or a blurry back.
- Holo pattern. Each era uses specific holographic patterns. A holo effect in the wrong place or with the wrong pattern suggests a fake.
Physical checks
- Feel and thickness. Compare to a genuine common from your collection. Fakes often feel thinner, flimsier or waxy.
- Card edges. Genuine cards are made of layered card stock. Fakes often lack this structure.
- The light test. Shine a phone flashlight through the card in a dark room and compare how much light passes through against a genuine card.
Buying safely
- Buy from reputable sellers with long histories and clear return policies.
- Ask for photos of the front and back in natural light.
- Be cautious when a rare card is priced far below recent sold comps.
- For high-value cards, consider buying already graded copies from established grading companies, and verify the certification number on the grader's official website.
